01 · Why it matters

Insulation is the performance layer that pays back every day.

Most Calgary homes built before 2010 are insulated to a standard that does not match what the climate actually demands. Older fibreglass batts settle, lose effective R-value, and develop convection paths that move conditioned air through the wall instead of holding it inside. Original air-sealing fails at penetrations, edges, and seam tape that has aged out. The result is a home that costs more to heat than it should, feels colder than it should at the perimeter, and leaks conditioned air into the attic and walls year-round.

The problem is mostly invisible. The drywall looks fine. The siding looks fine. But the wall assembly between them is doing a fraction of the work it should. In Calgary's −40°C to +35°C temperature range, the cost of that under-performance compounds every winter and every summer.

A proper insulation upgrade (addressing the assembly, not just the cavity) changes how the home performs. It is the renovation that homeowners feel the day the heating bill arrives.

02 · The EnerClear approach

We treat the wall as an assembly, not a cavity.

A Calgary wall is a layered system: cladding, sheathing, framing, cavity insulation, air barrier, drywall. The performance of the wall depends on how those layers work together, not on the R-value of any single component in isolation.

After decades of working on Calgary homes, EnerClear has settled on an exterior-side approach for most insulation upgrades. When the siding comes off for replacement, we add continuous exterior insulation (rigid foam or mineral wool) outside the sheathing. This breaks the thermal bridge through the studs, raises the effective R-value of the entire wall meaningfully, restores air-sealing continuity at the sheathing layer, and protects the cavity insulation behind it from temperature swings. In many older Calgary homes, just two inches of continuous rigid foam can effectively double the wall's R-value, a major gain in comfort and energy performance from a layer you'll never see.

That sequence (exterior insulation done at the same time as siding) is the highest-leverage moment in a Calgary exterior renovation. The cost premium is modest. The performance change is significant. And the wall is only open for one project, not two.

03 · What an upgrade includes

Layer 01 · Continuous

Continuous exterior insulation.

Rigid foam or mineral wool installed outside the sheathing during siding replacement. Breaks the thermal bridge through the studs. The single highest-leverage upgrade in most Calgary wall assemblies.

Layer 02 · Cavity

Cavity insulation restoration.

When walls are open, we assess the existing cavity insulation. Settled, compressed, or contaminated batts are removed and replaced with properly installed mineral wool or blown cellulose. Voids are sealed before new insulation is installed.

Layer 03 · Air-seal

Air-sealing and envelope detailing.

Air leakage is responsible for more heat loss than insufficient R-value in most Calgary homes. EnerClear addresses penetrations, rim joists, top plates, and electrical boxes (the spots where the air is actually moving).

Layer 04 · Attic

Attic and roof-plane upgrades.

When roofing is in scope, we coordinate attic insulation upgrades and ventilation balance. The attic is the largest single thermal interface on most Calgary homes, and a properly insulated, properly ventilated attic delivers measurable comfort and bill improvements.

Do I need to upgrade my insulation if I am replacing siding?

It is the highest-leverage moment to do it. The wall is open, the sheathing is exposed, and adding continuous exterior insulation while the siding is off costs a fraction of what it would cost as a standalone project. We will walk you through the cost-benefit during the assessment.

How much can insulation upgrades actually reduce my utility bill?

It depends on the starting condition, the home's size, and the scope of the upgrade. Most Calgary homes with original (pre-2010) insulation see meaningful, measurable reductions in heating cost the first full winter after a coordinated envelope upgrade. We are honest about the variables and do not promise specific dollar figures without knowing the home.

What R-value do you target?

It depends on the wall assembly, the local code, and the budget. We typically aim for an effective wall R-value (after thermal bridging) in the R-22 to R-30 range for most Calgary retrofits, with attic targets in the R-50 to R-60 range. The number on the bag is not the same as the number the wall actually delivers. We focus on the effective performance.

Is spray foam better than other insulation types?

Sometimes. Closed-cell spray foam delivers high R-value per inch and excellent air-sealing, but the cost premium is significant and the application is not the right fit for every assembly. EnerClear specifies the insulation type that fits the assembly and the budget, not the most expensive product by default.

Can I just blow insulation into the attic instead?

For older homes, attic top-up alone is the lowest-cost step in the right direction, but it leaves the walls (usually the larger thermal interface) unaddressed. The biggest performance gains come from coordinated envelope work, not single-component upgrades.
